Childrens’ Nutcracker Auditions

Childrens NutcrackerEvery September, José Mateo Ballet Theatre welcomes young dancers ages 6-18 to audition for our annual production of The Nutcracker for the chance to share the stage with our professional company.

Children from across Massachusetts are cast to fill the roles of party children, mice, polichinelles, cherubs and soldiers, many requiring no previous dance experience.  Our children’s cast offers youth the opportunity to have their moment in the spotlight!

The 2017 Nutcracker performances will be held at The Cutler Majestic Theatre in Boston’s Theatre District from November 25-December 10 and The Strand Theatre in Dorchester from December 15-24.  Not all children will
perform on all dates.

Audition Fee: $25
The audition fee may be paid by credit card when registering online or by cash/check on the day of auditions.

Audition Attire:
Girls: Leotard, tights, ballet slippers (pointe shoes for those with 3+ years training en pointe)
Boys: T-shirt, tights or shorts, ballet slippers

JMBT’s The Nutcracker is a professional production and the time commitment for our young dancers
and their families is substantial. Rehearsals run October-December – mostly on weekends – at our Cambridge studios. Attendance at all rehearsals is expected.

To pre-register for auditions, please click the links below.  You only need audition at one location. We ask that your arrive to the audition 15 minutes early to review your paperwork and pay your $25 registration fee. Please note that if you are registering more than one child for an audition, you need to use different email addresses for each child. Pre-registration is NOT required to audition, but will save you time on the day-of.

Participation Fees:
All children cast in The Nutcracker must pay a $200 participation fee.  Financial aid is available upon request. Cast members may also need to purchase leotards, tights, ballet slippers and special makeup depending on role.  These items are not included in the participation fee.

Pre-registration for auditions has closed, however, you are welcome to fill out registration paperwork on the day of auditions.

Over the past 30 years, thousands of children have participated in Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre’s professional production of The Nutcracker.  It has been a major achievement for many children and an incredible experience for their families.  One mother of a Nutcracker participant sent the following letter to Mr. Mateo after her child spent several years being part of this incredible performing opportunity.

Dear Mr. Mateo,
After so many years, I am certain that you cannot recall each child who was a mouse, polichinelle or angel. But, the impact that you and your company have on these children is life lasting. My daughter, Hanna was a mouse as an 8 year old, progressing to a poli, then a cherub. The poise, discipline and self-confidence she gained performing in The Nutcracker has served her well. Hanna stopped dancing in middle school as sports became her main focus.

Now entering medical school to pursue her ultimate dram, she has been asked what events or moments impacted her life. Consistently, she has answered bring focused, working as a team player and having confidence to be on stage, always with credit to her early days a mouse in The Nutcracker.

Your influence, firm yet kind, helped build a foundation that serves Hannah well, indeed.  Thank you for including children who I am certain you know will never be dancers, but will always be poised and self-assured ballerinas regardless of the stage they choose in life.
