Nutcracker Professional Company Auditions

Join José Mateo Ballet Theatre’s 37th annual production of The Nutcracker this holiday season! JMBT welcomes dancers of all backgrounds to audition for its professional company and character roles for the upcoming Nutcracker season. Advanced/Professional dancers with significant performance experience (en pointe for women) are encouraged to attend. Adult dancers interested in participating should contact us to discuss potential casting/involvement in certain roles. Auditions will be held both in-person at JMBT studios located in Harvard Square and via video submission.

Preference will be given to local dancers from the Greater Boston area.
Dancers must be legally authorized to work in the US. We are not able to sponsor international dancers at this time.

Some weekends as necessary to rehearse with the children’s cast

Details

Rehearsals will commence on November 10 and continue until the end of the production run. Dancers are to report each day for company class and rehearsals throughout the day. The rehearsal schedule for each day will be posted prior to the beginning of Company Class each day. Dancers will have a one hour lunch break during weekday rehearsals. Please note that weekend rehearsals will be scheduled ad hoc based on dancers’ casting and the children’s cast schedule.

Dancers will be offered a 6-week contract. Remuneration is commensurate with experience and role and will be paid bi-weekly.

Please note that dancers are highly recommended to arrive in shape and ready for an intensive rehearsal period due to the condensed rehearsal and performance timeline. JMBT will be offering complimentary adult open class credits to all contracted dancers from October 1 onwards in order to encourage proper preparation for the demanding season.

Dancers are recommended to audition in-person. Dancers should be prepared to attend an open class with additional exercises/repertoire (on pointe) as needed (2 hours).

Dancers are asked to wear form-fitting attire. Female dancers will have a separate pointe segment as part of the audition; some dancers may be asked to show partnering as well.

Video Audition Submission Details

Please submit 2 or 3 videos performance excerpts or ballet class exercises. Submissions should be a total of 5-10 minutes. Videos should be high quality with a clear showcase of dance technique and simple editing.

Female dancers must showcase dancing on pointe in a leotard and tights.
Male dancers are to showcase dancing in form-fitting dance attire in ballet shoes.

Auditions will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Dancers can expect a decision within four weeks of submission. Early submissions are encouraged.

Dancers may be asked to come in for a technique class upon submission of their video audition.

We will notify you of audition results or if we require additional material from you within one month of receiving your application.

Salary is based on experience and casting. Dancers will be paid in check, bi-weekly on Fridays.

Casting will be determined the first week of rehearsals. Specific role casting for performances will be determined the week before performances.

Ballet training and the exercises associated with it can place stresses on the body and can risk physical injury. I assume this risk and agree that José Mateo Ballet Theatre will not be liable in any way for injuries sustained during participation in the production or related activities.
