For nearly 35 years, José Mateo Ballet Theatre’s School has boldly challenged a centuries-old tradition of exclusion and elitism to create a more inclusive, just and humanistic approach to expert ballet training.
Creatively adapting to the current conditions triggered by COVID-19, the School is inventively embracing the technology so critical to advancing the role of dance in our reconfigured communities.
The School serves both children and adults, from the beginner to the professional. The Adult Dancers Program offers a robust curriculum of classes for adults (ages 19 and up) of all levels of experience and ability taught by dedicated and experienced professional instructors.

Dress Code
The only traditional ballet attire required of our adult students is ballet slippers. Otherwise students may wear what is easy to move in and makes them feel most at ease: traditional leotards and tights or typical work out clothing such as leggings and tank tops. Whatever you wear we do ask that it be form-fitted, stretchy and allow for freedom of movement while allowing the teacher to see your silhouette. Longer hair should be pulled back away from the face.
Space and Equipment Requirements
We recommend a space of at least 6′ x 6′ for barre work and at least 8′ x 8′ for centre work. Additionally, we recommend that students have a ballet barre or use the back of a chair (weighted down with books to prevent it from moving) as a substitute.
Holidays
There will be no classes held January 18 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day), February 15–21 (February Vacation), April 19–25 (April Vacation), or May 29–31 (Memorial Day Weekend).
Student Portal
After enrolling, you will gain access to a Student Portal where you will find important information such as guidelines for setting up your at-home class space and links to your Zoom classes.
