José Mateo Ballet Theatre’s Young Dancers Program is based on the philosophy that every student has the right to a quality ballet education. The Young Dancers Program, offering ballet training for children ages 3 to 18, has an unsurpassed reputation throughout New England for its excellent, humanistic approach to ballet education.

The Young Dancers Program offers an innovative, challenging curriculum. Individualized instruction in ballet technique, conditioning, and repertory will be given with the caring attention that is the hallmark of JMBT’s school. The Young Dancers Program distinguishes itself from other ballet programs by offering: customized, personal ballet instruction and mentoring; innovative ballet training methods that give young dancers the versatility required by today’s diverse dance world; dedicated, experienced faculty; and an impressive record of training students for professional ballet and dance careers.

ELEMENTARY DIVISION

For children ages 3–10. No audition necessary.

LOCATION

Our Dorchester Studios are located at 14 Cushing Avenue in Upham’s Corner, Dorchester (inside St. Mary’s Episcopal Church).

HEALTH & SAFETY PROTOCOLS

We have prepared our space to receive you in as practical and safe a way as possible. We are taking steps to improve ventilation, sanitation, and circulation.

As a reminder, we ask students to respect the following protocols:

— Students are asked to wear face coverings when in the building.

— Students are encouraged to maintain basic hygiene, including hand washing as necessary. Hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes will be available for use in all studios.

— In order to minimize gathering, we ask that students arrive dressed for class.

— If you are sick or experiencing symptoms, we encourage you to consider staying home.

AUDITION

Experienced students who wish to enter the Middle Division must attend a placement audition. To set up an audition, please contact Gabrielle Domb at gdomb@ballettheatre.org.

Placement in the Elementary Division is based on age alone and no audition is required.

Financial Aid Stipulations

JMBT scholarship students must:

1. Be enrolled in the Full Program* and remain committed to attending the Full Program through the end of the year in June.
2. Comply with all rules and regulations of Ballet Theatre including, but not limited to, dress code, punctuality, general conduct, and class protocols.
3. Attend and be on time to all scheduled classes. Scholarship students may not be late to class more than 3 times or have more than 3 unexcused absences during the course of the program. Excused absences and lateness must be communicated to the office by a parent/guardian in advance of the start of class.
4. Participate in all scheduled classes and activities and other organizational programs.
5. Seek and receive permission from artistic staff before enrolling in additional dance classes or accepting a performance engagement elsewhere, through August 31, 2022.

Financial Aid Application Requirements

Before you begin your Enrollment Application, please have ready:

  1. A digital copy (e.g., scan, image, pdf) of your most recent tax filing. This must include the IRS Form 1040 showing the student listed as a dependent and showing your Adjusted Gross Income. Example 1040

  2. The following 4 short written statements:
    1. A statement of financial need
    2. A statement of your child's interest in the study of dance
    3. A statement of your family's willingness to support this interest
    4. A statement of commitment to full participation in the program and the eligibility requirements outlined above
